4 Fascinating Plots to See in Downtown Texas

AUSTIN (KXAN) – On the opening weekend of high school football there are some exceptional games that don’t belong in the Central Texas district.

This week begins the march to the UIL state playoffs and, for the lucky few, a state championship. Westlake is betting on an unprecedented third consecutive title during Todd Dodge’s final season, while Cedar Park is aiming for a trip back to the state championship round with a new head coach.

Liberty Hill is looking for more things after an inspiring 2020 playoff run for head coach Jeff Walker. Lake Travis focuses on redemption after a surprising early playoff start.

This is what you can see during the first week of football in central Texas.

Accounts to see week 1

Westlake to the Temple

Defending state champion 6A, Westlake, opens Friday on the road to Temple at 7:30 p.m., a match you can watch live on KXAN.com.

Legendary head coach Todd Dodge will retire at the end of this season and hopes to return to AT&T Stadium in December. The Chaparrals are led by quarterback Cade Klubnik, who bets on Clemson, and future Texas Longhorn Connor Robertson, who leads the offensive line.

Lake Travis vs. Arlington Martin

Lake Travis comes from a frustrating 2020 season. The Cavaliers spent nearly a month between their last game of the regular season and their initial loss in the round against Rock Rock.

Once again, the Cavs are in good hands with the quarterback, with young Bo Edmundson at the helm of the offense, with great receiver Caleb Burton of Ohio State giving him another huge weapon in attack.

Cedar Park in Vandegrift

Both Leander ISD schools made deep runs in the playoffs in 2020. Vandegrift lost to Hays in the quarterfinals of 6A D2, while Cedar Park lost to Denton Ryan in the 5A D1 championship game.

The Timberwolves not only replaced several key players for their high-powered offense, including quarterback Ryan Hernandez, but head coach Carl Abseck moved to Barbers Hill in the Houston area. Former Cedar Park assistant Michael Quintero replaces Abseck. Drew Sanders enters his twelfth season as Vandegrift’s sole head coach.

Bowie vs. Vista Ridge

Bowie felt an unusual sensation last year after failing in the playoffs for the first time since 2006. Jeff Ables is entering his twentieth season as head coach of the Bulldogs and will be backed by third-year starter, the senior quarterback Diego Tello. Tello passed more than 2100 yards and 23 touchdowns in 2020.

Vista Ridge is in transition. Former head coach Rodney Vincent left for Shallowater in West Texas and defensive coordinator Chad Scott was promoted to replace Vincent.
