HOUSTON (AP) – Texas’ new law that allows most people to carry handguns in public without permission or training is due in part to the belief of many Texans that the best way to prevent crime and stop a bad guy armed is to make sure an armed a good guy is nearby.
Gov. Greg Abbott and his Republican allies in the legislature, which this summer made Texas the largest state with a so-called unauthorized transportation law, came up with it as a way to allow people to defend themselves more facilitated without government interference. But research suggests that crime increases after these laws are enforced. And Texas authorities are concerned that having more people walking around armed leads to resolving smaller disagreements through gunfire.
