CLEVELAND (AP / KXAN) – Baker Mayfield returned after injuring his left shoulder to throw a touchdown pass and run for a TD, leading the Cleveland Browns to a 31-21 win on Sunday against the Houston Texans, who were there until starting quarterback Tyrod Taylor got hurt.

Nick Chubb has had a 26-yard touchdown run for the Browns (1-1), which has bounced back from a Week 1 loss to Kansas City to excite his first home team since 2019.

Mayfield was left 10 for 10 after an interception in the first half (and injured his shoulder that he didn’t throw while making the attack on the play) and finished 19 of 21 for 213 yards. The Lake Travis High School graduate is now 3-1 against the Texas teams during his NFL career.

The Mayfield Browns swept two games in 2020 against Lone Star State, winning in Dallas and at home against Houston. He lost his first NFL game in the state in 2019 in Houston.

Chubb had 95 yards in 11 runs.

Browns debutant Demetric Felton grabbed a short pass from Mayfield, made a turn, broke an inning and went 33 yards in the third quarter to get an electrifying TD to put Cleveland ahead for good.

The Texans (1-1) tied at halftime and moved the ball easily before losing Taylor to a hamstring injury.

The 32-year-old, who spent 2018 with Cleveland and got Houston’s job this season by default due to Deshaun Watson’s legal issues, completed 10 of 11 passes in the first half, but didn’t get out of the locker room .

Taylor’s injury forced rookie Davis Mills to his first action in the NFL and he threw an interception in his second series.

Mills threw a 2-yard TD pass to Brandin Cooks in the fourth quarter to take the jeans out in a 24-21 period.

But the Browns responded with an 82-yard touchdown, mostly on the ground, that Chubb finished with his marker.

Cleveland wide receiver Jarvis Landry injured his knee on the second offensive play and did not return.

Taylor’s injury was the most notable for Houston, but not the only one, as the Texans had a difficult day.

For a while, Browns fans waited nervously while Mayfield was in the locker room receiving treatment.

The Cleveland QB hurt his shoulder when he threw his pick and then threw himself into the legs of Texans insurance Justin Reid. Mayfield remained on the ground in obvious pain while being evaluated.

He was helped and checked at the medical store before jogging into the locker room. Mayfield returned to the bench a few minutes later.

While Mayfield was out, Taylor scored a 15-yard scamper in the third to give the Texans a 14-7 lead.

In his first possession, Mayfield scored in a 5-yard run that he celebrated by shooting the ball into the wall in front of the Dawg Pound section.

PARIA MALALGIA

Landry’s injury not only affected Cleveland’s offense, but ended in an impressive streak.

The eight-year veteran had scored at least two passes in 111 straight games, the fourth-longest streak in history. The famous Tim Brown holds the record with 147, one more than Jerry Rice.

WHERE THERE ARE WILLS

The Browns who started attacking left Jedrick Wills Jr. they played despite losing practice all week with a sprained left ankle suffered at the start of the opening.

Wills played part of the third quarter before being replaced by Blake Hance.

Wills’ status gained more prominence as his supporter, Chris Hubbard, was ruled out earlier in the week with a triceps injury.

Jeans: WR Nico Collins (shoulder) was injured in the first quarter and did not return. … S Eric Murray (concussion), WR Danny Amendola (hamstring), TE Antony Auclair (eye), CB Terrance Mitchell (head) and Reid (lower leg / head) were also injured.
