FOOTBALL COLLECTION: Red Raiders 1, Tritons 1 (2OT)

LA JOLLA, California – Texas Tech and UC San Diego drew 1-1 Sunday at Triton Soccer Stadium, with both teams scoring their goals five minutes into the second half. Macy Schultz scored the Red Raider goal with an unassisted equalizer in the 71st minute to tie the game at 1-1 after Kennedy Carter had opened the scoring with a goal in the 65th minute for the Tritons (0-1-1).

“We’re disappointed to come out here,” the Texas Tech head coach said Tom Stone dit. “I thought UC San Diego played well and deserved full credit. They won the draw. They played a lot and had a good game plan. There were some positive aspects within our game. I thought Cassie Hiatt and some of our younger players were excellent, but we didn’t get a full top-down performance. You don’t want to get out of here in the second game of the season after beating a 22-6 team and not getting the win. It’s football, so we get it to happen, but the disappointment is in our execution at the offensive end of the field. “

Texas Tech (1-0-1) will now start a four-game home game starting at 7pm on Thursday against Hartford before hosting Abilene Christian next Sunday to make it to the Walker Soccer Complex.

A Colorado junior, Schultz scored his first goal of the season and the seventh of his career. Schultz had two shots on goal along with the senior Kirsten Davis who led Texas Tech with seven overall shots. Davis scored Tech’s only goal in the 1-0 win over UTEP in the first game of the season last Thursday at Lubbock and now has six shots on goal through two games.

Texas Tech finished the game with eight shots on goal and limited UCSD to just three, while possessing a 22-6 lead in the 110 minutes of play Sunday afternoon. The Red Raiders had two shots on goal in the second overtime, first by Hannah Anderson in the 103rd minute and then with Charlotte Teeter shooting UCSD goalkeeper Grace Taylor in the 108th minute. Taylor made both stops and finished the game with seven.

Madison White recorded two stops, including one in the Red Raiders ’second overtime. White, who has played 200 minutes in goal this season, made his last stop in the 101st minute with a shot from Carter in the first minute of the second session. Carter had all three shots on goal for the Tritons who had lost 3-0 to Cal on Thursday to start their season.

Five Red Raiders played the 110 minutes with Teeter, Anderson, Cassie Hiatt and Davis staying on the field throughout the game along with White on goal. Macy Blackburn played 107 minutes and ended the match with a single shot.

“We just had too many chances of not leaving them out,” Stone said. “We’ll be back to work immediately. We have players who can score, we just want them to feel comfortable and confident. They’re not really happy either, so the whole team will keep moving fast. When we get back to Lubbock, we can have a good performance on thursday “.
