Is Apple HQ moving to Texas? False to the core

Editor’s Note: Welcome to screenshots, in which senior technical reporter Jeff Elder reports on the comings and goings of SF’s largest industry. Stay tuned as we keep all technologies up to date.

Stanford Hoover Institution reported inaccurately that apple two weeks ago he moved his headquarters to Austin in a report. That was news for Apple. As the report shows, a company spokeswoman said, “This listing is inaccurate.” The institution is just 14 miles off I-280 of the world-famous 176-acre Cupertino headquarters, and Stanford libraries contain 40 of the company’s archive collections. But researchers, Hoover’s scholar Lee Ohanian i Joseph Vranich, used the file Austin Chamber of Commerce as a source. Because? Some explanation can be found in the first footnote of the report, which subtly points out that lead author Vranich, who has billed himself as “The Transfer Coach”, he runs a suit that helps companies move from California to Texas. “Liberal cities are a mess: let’s help ourselves move to a conservative community,” says a page on Vranich’s website. He has written articles such as “Confucius would urge Chinese companies to avoid California” …

Well, that’s good news for The City’s tech startups and ghost tech campuses. In his report to the Supes this week, Ted Egan, Chief City Economist, said venture capital investment in SF is at an all-time high. And some startups may be using that money to rent offices on large tech campuses. Egan said San Francisco leads the nation in sublease offices and falling commercial rents. “The big tech companies that wanted to grow a lot put space in the market,” Egan said. “The little ones hire her.” But, he warned, “We still have a big supply gap with respect to demand” …

It looks like all the tech reporters in the bay are covering the big one Theranos even the foreign media cannot get enough of it. I received two breathless emails from a large UK radio network asking me if I could make a spot that morning during the trial. This made my eyes more open than Elizabeth Holmes’, considering I don’t remember always writing about the disgraced medical research company. However, I can tell you my favorite tweet about the trial so far: “ELIZABETH HOLMES OFFERS TO TEST THERANOS LIE DETECTOR TO PROVE INNOCENCE” by Onion-y @hardmoneymag

Waymo attracted a crowd on Thursday night Exploratorium’s After Dark event (which now hosts 700-900 geek parties!) with a virtual reality screen showing how self-driving Jaguars cross the western part of The City. Waymo has about 2,000 employees, some in a Potrero Hill office, where they work on the San Francisco challenges for the white Jaguar I-PACE electric models. As? Smart cars are baffled by those party buses that look like cable cars, because they’re not where cable cars should be. And the fog, of course. Sensors that indicate what’s in the cars sometimes have a hard time scouring it all when Karla the fog makes heavy rolls …

Okay, okay, we’ll mention digital music of this century. Gifted local clerk Benjamin Schneider says the SF rapper Stunnaman02 it’s the real deal, and the “I know” video I posted on YouTube two weeks ago is for my untrained eyes and ears, really well. My SF Media colleague Schneider is an expert and says, “Stunnaman is the real business. Certainly the greatest local artist of 2021 ”. Believe he, not me …
