AUSTIN (KXAN): Saturday, September 11, 2021 marks 20 years since September 11, a day that changed America forever. These are events that take place in central Texas to honor and remember the nearly 3,000 people who lost their lives.
Austin Fire Department Memorial Service
The Austin Fire Association is holding its annual 9/11 commemoration ceremony. The guard of honor will attend. The event will also remember Austin firefighters, active and retired, who died last year.
Hill Country Gallery 9/11 memorial climbing
Bee Cave and Lakeway police departments, along with Lake Travis Fire Rescue, will climb 110 floors in the parking lot near Dillard’s to honor fallen FDNY firefighters and other first responders who lost their lives on Sept. 11. The public is welcome to attend the fire and police teams.
Remembrance Ceremony of the American Legion Hunter-Morris Post 911
Cedar Park Mayor Corbin Van Arsdale will make welcome statements along with representatives of the Cedar Park police and fire departments and members of the Armed Forces. Cedar Park Fire Chief James Mallinger will make the main comments.
Tribute to the Rotary Club flag
Hundreds of flags will be placed in the lot in front of the Balcones Country Club. Club rotarians will be present alongside Austin firefighters. Boy Scout Troop 513 will publish the colors.
Climb to the commemorative tower of the Circuit of the Americas (sold)
The Circuit of the Americas, along with the local non-profit Samaritan Center, will host a Memorial Tower Climb. Participants will climb the stairs to the observation deck and descend four times to mimic the number of floors (110) in the two Twin Towers of the World Trade Center.
The event is organized by Gonzalo Herrera, a graduate of Texas State University and a veteran of the U.S. Marine Corps who completed a combat tour of Afghanistan.
The event has sold out, but donations can still be made to the Samaritan Center, a non-profit organization that provides mental health services for veterans, first responders, the military and their families.
