HARTFORD, Wis. – The 16ththThe qualifying Texas A&M men’s golf team opened the season in style as the Aggies swept the team and individual titles on Tuesday at the Marquette Intercollegiate held in Erin Hills.
Maroon & White scored a 281 set in the final round to finish the tournament with 32 less, four times ahead of South Florida. The victory meant the third title of the tournament for the Aggies who were second-year coaches Brian Kortan. In addition, Texas A&M broke the tournament record with the lowest parity score in 19 strokes (13 minors) set by Stanford in 2013 and SMU in 2015.
Individually, Walker Lee he recorded his fourth win of the race when the Houston native finished the tournament at age 14, defeating East Tennessee State’s Mats Ege for once. Lee shot a 3 of less than 69 in the final round, carding six birdies. For the tournament, he led the field in par 3 scoring and was second in birdies at 17.
“Today has been amazing and there couldn’t have been a better way to start the season,” Kortan said. “The guys were great this week. To win a golf tournament on a fantastic course like this against a lot of quality teams, you have to do a lot of good things, and we did. Walker (Lee) played consistent all week. he drove it very well, but his iron play was on.He had some great iron shots and was put in a scoring position, which is the bottom line in this game.
“It takes a good team effort to win these college golf tournaments. It’s hard to do. Sam (Bennett) has had a great round today. Daniel Rodrigues He came back with a very nice round. Michael Heidelbaugh today he hasn’t gotten a fantastic score, but he has given us a good start with the way he played starting with the new striker. Coming here with two new guys and winning a college golf tournament on the doorstep is amazing for this program and it shows where we are and the kind of kids we have. ”
Sam Bennett i Michael Heidelbaugh has reached the top 15 while the duo draws at 12th at 5 years, i Phichaksn Maichon tied at 22nd with 3 years in his first collegiate tournament.
Daniel Rodrigues tied at 54th and was 3 minors in the final round. Rodrigues had 2 below the new front with birds at numbers 4 and 5, and moved to 6 below the day with birds attached to holes 12 and 13 in front of an eagle at no. The number 15 and the bogeyed 18 to finish with a 69, his best round of the tournament.
The Aggies return to action Sept. 13-15 at the Maridoe Collegiate Invitational held at the Maridoe Golf Club in Carrollton, Texas.
