BRAZOS COUNTY, Texas – The Gulf Coast expects heavy rainfall as Tropical Storm Nicholas continues to form.
Lone Star State is preparing for potential flooding, with some resources coming directly from College Station – Texas A&M Task Force 1.
Tropical Storm Nicolas has yet to land, but Charlie Abney, supervisor of the Texas A&M Task Force 1 aquatic group, and his crew are already in Corpus Christi, preparing for what is to come.
“All these 24 hours give us time to set it all up, so we don’t show up after the rainy event starts and people are already in trouble,” Abney said.
Much of this preparation for Texas A&M Working Group 1 is to meet with local response agencies and assess land for troubled areas.
“We can get to know the people in the area and say,‘ Where are you, where are the problems you have most often, with a little rain or a lot of rain? We see these places so we can know how we are going in or out, ”said Keith Brown, aquatic group supervisor for Texas A&M Working Group 1.
“Most areas and jurisdictions we go to don’t have sturdy aquatic rescue equipment, but we’re here to help you, fill the void and provide you with what you otherwise wouldn’t have,” Abney said.
Texas A&M Task Force 1 has squadrons of ships parked along the entire Gulf Coast, stretching from Brownsville to Beaumont, as they anticipate heavy rains from the tropical storm.
“As a team, we will monitor where the rains have fallen. It is difficult to predict exactly where these needs will be, but between us on the ground and back at the state operations center, they will help us decide where to go,” Brown said. .
“The storm could get a lot bigger. We’re here to help the state of Texas as much as we can, and we’ll be prepared for what happens,” Abney said.
While reminding people to avoid stagnant water and listening to weather reports and guidelines.
