DAYTON – The University of Cincinnati volleyball team got its first win of the season on Friday, defeating Texas State University three sets to one.
Cincinnati (1-1) finished the second game of the day with 67 deaths in 178 attempts and a total of 76 excavations and 62 assists.
- Only in his second appearance as Bearcat, Abby Walker led the team with 17 kills in 33 attempts. His 17 murders were peaks in the race.
- Shannon Williams was second on the team with 14 kills in 36 attempts.
- Maria Mallon he had his second double-double of the day and season with 12 dead and 14 excavations.
- Armania Heckenmueller he had 59 assists in his second game of the 2021 season.
- Six Bearcats finished the game with seven or more points.
SET 1: UC 25, Texas State 20
Texas State got an initial 5-2 lead, but that lead quickly faded when Sarah Norcom tied the game at 6. Shortly after, the Bearcats continued with a 5-0 run to give themselves a 12-8 lead. A Texas State downtime seemed to give him some momentum, but he would never be able to regain the lead. Texas State would reduce the Bearcats ’lead to one point on two occasions, but Cincinnati would not give it up. After a Texas state block got it 18-17, Cincinnati called for a timeout and won seven of the last 10 points to win the first set.
SET 2: Texas State 28, UC 26
An exciting second set began for Texas State taking an initial 9-3 lead. After a murder by Shannon Williams finished with a 3-0 of the Bearcats, its deficit was of only two points. The teams changed 3-0 in the race until the score was 13-11, still in favor of Texas State. A Cincinnati 4-0 tied the game at 15. This set would end in 11 draws at 15, 16, 17, 18, 19, 20, 22, 23, 24, 25 and 26. Texas State was finally able to score twice. followed by the victory of set two in a round trip set.
SET 3: UC 26, Texas State 24
Another hard-fought set started with more ties. The biggest advantage of either team was the four-point advantage, which Cincinnati had on four different occasions. Texas State would end up taking a 24-22 lead, but a timeout from the Bearcats gave them what they needed to finish the set. They started four straight points, limited by one Shannon Williams kill, to give them a 26-24 victory and a 2-1 lead in the match.
SET 4: UC 25, Texas State 20
The Bearcats would get a 4-1 lead to start this set, but would stay close until about halfway through the time Cincinnati jumped to a 15-9 lead after a state attack error. Texas. However, Texas State had a bit of a fight left and, after falling between 19 and 14, managed to reduce Cincinnati’s lead to just one between 21 and 20.
