The University of Texas will send counselors to assist campus police in mental health calls

AUSTIN (KXAN) – The University of Texas at Austin says it will now send trained advisors to help its police officers during mental health-related emergencies.

The university is partnering with the mental health care and response team for this initiative.

Similar programs have been introduced across the country as a way to promote de-escalation tactics for law enforcement agencies. UT says its goal is to divert people from the criminal justice system.

This new security initiative will begin as a two-year pilot program and will be developed in phases.
